Don’t get me wrong. I think the man is guilty as sin and should be skidded out of the Oval office on a big silver tray. That’s not going to happen. It looked for a while as though some Republicans would grow the spine they needed to at least call witnesses. But I don’t think that’s going to happen either. The rationalizations are also becoming wackier.
Consider this defender’s argument.
“Every public official I know believes that his election is in the public interest,” said Alan M. Dershowitz, the celebrity defense lawyer and constitutional scholar who is part of the Mr. Trump’s legal team. “Mostly, you’re right.”
“If the president does something which he believes will help him get elected, in the public interest, that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment,” he said.
Wowser, that’s a stretch. He didn’t stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot someone, but what he is going to get away with is just about as bad.
It’s like Dershowitz is arguing a president can do no wrong if the wrong he does advances his electoral interests. What would be wrong if it advances the nation’s interests? The argument here seems to be Trump is good for the country, so anything bad he does just kinds of flies out the windows in the Impeachment effort. Anything short of that would damage the country.
That’s a little sickening and enough to make you vomit a little in your mouth if you think about it too much. So don’t. Just accept the fact that these spineless Senators will let President Trump continue on down the road to the next election, slandering his enemies and friends alike and basically making the U.S. look like the United States of Bananadom. It’s that crazy an argument.
Remember here, the charge is that Trump offered an exchange. If the Ukranians would announce they were investigating one of his likely opponents, Joe Biden, he would let $400 million in military aid move into the Ukrainian war against the Russians. Not much doubt about how and why this happened. The liar in chief just followed his instincts.
They should just vote this turkey by weeks end and be done with it. We have watched a coverup play out right in front of us, and I suspect we are still too dumb to recognize it.
I, for one, am just going to bed and call on sweet dreams to wipe out the memory of this pathetic day.
