Stop pissing on Bernie!

Being a college professor was never an easy job if you took it seriously. You had to be frank with a lots of kids whose parents were spending money in hopes opportunity would come knocking when the degree was conferred. It does not, in most cases. I was a heroic professor and very highly rated by my students, but that didn’t protect me when it came Time to trim the non tenure folks to save money. I was pruned.

But I came away from the experience (I did it for 11 years) with tremendous respect and affection for most of my students. Nothing was more revealing in all those years of teaching than my presidential election course from 2016. We all gathered for pizza and election returns on the first floor of the Gage building only to see Donald Trump win the contest. In my wildest nightmares, I had not figured that would happen. I viewed the entire semester as a waste, with its intensive focus on history and primaries and what has happened in the past. I was a fool, I now feel. I should have told them “Don’t rule out the stupidest option!’ just to protect them.

But I learned something very valuable. Balding old men with red faces appeal to college students. I’m not talking about me, although that shoe fits. I’m talking about Bernie Sanders. Almost everyone in the class wanted Bernie to win and believed he should. I said “a socialist? Really?” They concluded most people had no idea what a socialist was, so what’s the problem. I think now that they were right. All I could say when the results came in from the New Hampshire primary was “of course.” He had the most compelling campaign and the most attractive message, especially for the young voters.

So Bernie wins and the media immediately starts all that “What’s the centrist alternative” in the Democratic Party?” crap and agitating for an alternative. Two points to make about this outcome. 1. It’s what the electorate in New Hampshire wanted and 2. Media should just shut up and watch so it can explain things later.

Good for Bernie. I have no stomach for the kind of campaign Trump would run against him. It would be mean, snotty, negative, all those Trump things. That it might work is even more depressing. Have we learned nothing?

Nope. We have not. A classroom full of libs at a liberal college in a liberal town knew what he had going four years ago. We the traditionalists did not.

I’m afraid I only want to watch from here on out.

  1. Charlie Bernie should stop in my view. He has appealing ideas, but you know America in 2020 is not ready for them.
